Bridging Prescriptions
We recognise that waiting for an NHS gender identity service can be difficult and distressing. We remain committed to supporting trans and gender diverse patients with their physical and mental health needs while they wait.
Chobham and West End Medical Practice does not initiate hormone treatment for gender incongruence, including temporary “bridging” prescriptions. We are no longer able to enter into shared care agreements with private providers for hormone treatment for gender incongruence. This means we cannot prescribe these treatments on the recommendation of a private provider.
None of our GPs currently specialises in initiating or managing this treatment. Hormone prescribing requires an individual assessment, appropriate monitoring, and the expertise to recognise and manage potential side effects and other risks. A GP who signs a prescription takes clinical responsibility for it and must be satisfied they can prescribe safely within their competence.
We may consider prescribing following a recommendation from an NHS specialist where an appropriate shared care arrangement is in place and a GP agrees to take on prescribing responsibility.
We can discuss an NHS referral and any other support you may need.
